Give your garden and backyard flock the marine calcium they crave. Made from 100% upcycled Maine oyster shells, this hybrid blend combines fine powder for fast-acting soil absorption with coarse flakes for pest defense and digestive grit.
How Does It Help?
Stops Blossom End Rot: The fine powder delivers a targeted calcium spike for healthy, flawless tomatoes, peppers, and squash.
Balances Acidic Soil: Naturally "sweetens" pine-heavy New England dirt so roots can easily absorb vital nutrients.
Deters Slugs & Snails: The coarse flakes create a natural, chemical-free barrier that soft-bodied pests won't cross.
Strengthens Eggshells: Provides the essential slow-release calcium and digestive grit backyard hens need for thick, healthy eggs.
How Much Do I Need?
Targeted Planting: Use 1/4 cup (2 oz) mixed into the bottom of each hole.
Top-Dressing & Pest Barrier: Broadcast 1 pound per 20 square feet.
Poultry Grit: Consumption varies widely by chicken. A typical laying hen might consume between 1/3 pound to 1 pound of supplemental oyster shell per month.
Choose Your Size:
8 oz Pouch: Perfect for potted plants, target-treating 3–4 tomatoes, or roughly a month’s supply for one hen.
5 lb Bag: The standard raised-bed size. Perfect for a 4x8 garden box, or a month's supply for 5-10 hens.
20 lb Sack: The homesteader size. Broad soil sweetening for a 400-sq-ft plot, or bulk grit for larger flocks.
How to Use:
Planting Seedlings: Mix a small handful (2–3 tablespoons) directly into the hole before planting so roots touch it immediately.
Established Beds & Pest Control: Sprinkle a visible ring around the base of hostas and veggies to deter slugs and feed topsoil.
Backyard Flocks: Keep a small, dry container of shell grit available next to their regular feed dispenser. Offer free-choice in a separate dish (hens regulate their own intake).
ABOUT
As a young boy in Waterville Maine we were surrounded by industry; mills, trucks, and working people doing the unglamorous jobs that keep everything else running.
Behind our house, along the Kennebec River, was a place that my brothers and I liked to call the “junkyard.” It had unfortunately been a secret dumping spot for a long time before we lived there, but all we saw was a fun place to explore and play.
After a nail through my brother’s shoe sent us to the hospital for a tetanus booster, we learned pretty quick that junk doesn’t really go anywhere. It just becomes someone else’s problem.
Years later after spending time on the coast, I started to notice that everyone had their own version of the “junkyard.” Lots of people trying to do the right thing, but heavy, wet waste piles up, is expensive to get rid of, and causes a lot of problems when you can’t do it quickly.
And so Oxwhale was born. I believe that not only can we keep our waste areas clean and fresh, but we can work together to create something much better! For our businesses, our communities, and our planet.
